Salem was founded by Sem Wissler. Wissler purchased the land for the settlement in 1844. In 1862 eight acres of land was purchased from Sem Wissler and the cemetery was opened in 1864. Sem Wissler, who died in 1865, aged 46, was one of the earliest burials. Memorial Gates were added in 1931 and the stone Chapel erected in 1936. When the Anglican Cemetery, located at the south-west corner of the Village, was closed, a number of the bodies and/or stones were removed to the Elora Municipal Cemetery and placed in Section B. This is why Section B contains markers with death dates prior to the opening of the cemetery.
